Westhaven – A cafeteria employee of a local elementary school wants to be acknowledged for the services he provides – without being gender stereotyped. Fred Allen has been working in the Fremont Elementary cafeteria for 10 years. He has largely enjoyed his time cooking and socializing with the students, minus one detail – his title.
“Yep, it’s right there on my pay stub. $13.25 an hour for working as a Lunch Lady. Not sure if you can tell, but I’m no lady,” Allen told one reporter. “I want the title changed to Nutrition Provider. It’s a more accurate description of what I do around here.”
Westhaven ISD superintendent Jim French seems willing to comply, adding that the lawsuit is confusing to him and seemingly came out of nowhere. “I certainly don’t mind changing the title,” he said in a recent comment, “but nobody required him to wear the apron and lipstick. He did that on his own.”
